We utilize specialized molding machines and processing methods to insert mold trifurcate connections at the union of multi-lumen catheters and the adjoining port tubes. This molding technology has proven to reduce leakage of catheter assemblies, thus minimizing component rejections and assembly field failures.
Today, catheters can be extruded to include multiple passageways, or lumens, of various size and configurations. These lumens allow for deployment of multiple devices and use in a single catheter design. To do so, each lumen requires a port, or single tube, through which the specific device is introduced to the catheter. The union of these ports and the catheter can present both aesthetic and function challenges to both design and manufacturing engineers.
Traditional solutions for joining ports to multi-lumen catheters have included adhesives or heat shrinking. Both of these solutions are often inconsistently applied and lead to high product failure rates due to leakage. Adhesive bonding has additional problems with application, curing and aesthetics.
Insert molding has been successfully applied in catheter applications such as luers on port tubes. However, successfully molding material at the precise union of three ports and a multi-lumen catheter offers a unique contribution to catheter systems. Also known as a trifurcate, this molded piece simultaneously secures the three tubes to the catheter and provides a consistent seal upon molding.
